TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") The first race at Hawera to-day starts at 11.40, and, with only seven events set down for decision, patrons will be enabled to get well on the road home before dusk. Racing commences with the Tongahoe Hurdles, one and a-half miles, for which a good field of thirteen is carded. The likely starters include Golden Grafton, Munster, and Royal Park, who have recent form to commend them, and the last-named pair read very well at the weights. The Hack and Hunters' Steeples, about two miles, will provide an interesting contest. Spalperion is the most seasoned of the crowd, but the Aucldander is not too sound, and speedy horses like Polthologue and Speedwell Mac may be more dangerous, providing they negotiate the country. The issue looks very open. A good class of 'chasers will be saddled up for the Egmont Steeples, run over a, dista.iee of about two and a-half miles. Yellow and Black and Diavolo have both schooled well, and their respective followers will not hear of defeat. The Tawhiti Handicap, six furlongs, will keep punters, very busy. Volo may be all the better for a gallop in public, but Inah, who will have the services of H. Gray, is very fit. Simonides, Play Off, and others may make the finish interesting for Gray's mount. Another big field will line up for the Telegraph Handicap, five furlongs. Much depends on the start: but quick beginners like Post Haste and Hallow cannot be .overlooked. The McEac Memorial Handicap, one and a-quarter miles, will probably see Marqueteur in most demand. Robinand Alteration also run a good ten furlongs, »o that the race will prove anyl*?iing but ft walk-over. To"-day's racing will conclude with the Railway Handicap, seven furlongs, which should test the powers of Oadot, Signor- ; piia, and Nemaline. Mr, d. O'Connor (starter) and S. ; Kreetzer (racecourse detective) arrived last evonfnj?. The judge's 'box' will be filled by Mr. J. Cameron, whose work at Pulls, 'Feilding. attd othor plaoeg left nothing to be desired. A largo number pf visitors, including "sports' 1 from Auckland, Wellington, and Hawke's Bay, ' arrived yesterday, and the attendance promises to be very large. All arrangements are ioi n-wowd wwWna
