DISTRICT NEWS.

KORITO. (From. Our Own Correspondent). A welcome home social was tendered on Tuesday evening, May 0, to Privates Ernest and Dick Herbert, and Lance-Corporal Harry Molloy. The schoolroom proved all too small to hold the many friends who gathered to bid these soldiers welcome. Mr. Houlahan, in a very appropriate speech, presented each soldier with an illuminated address, on behalf of their many friends at Korito and Albert Road. ''For they are jolly (rood fellows" was sung by all with much enthusiasm. Private Ernest Herbert, on behalf oi' Ills fellow comrades and himself, suitably responded. Supper was handed round by the ladies. and greatly enjoyed by all. Songs were contributed by Mrs. Ansford and Mr. Kemp, and a much enjoyed entertainment came to a close in the early hours of the morning. Another of our settlers, Mr. J. Luke, has sold his farm, and, I understand, Intends going north. Private V. Mine, of Walongona. the purchaser, will take possession ou June 1.

PUNGAREHU. (From Our Own Correspondent). There has been nothing startling to record here—just the usual routine of everyday work. The good spell of fine weather has enabled the road men to make rapid progress in the remetalllng of Parihaka road. On the completion of this road, which is expected at the end of the week, a start is then to be made on Tepako road. A meeting is to be held this afternoon of those willing to assist In the formation of a large committee, with a view to removing the disabilities under which this district labored at the recent epidemic. This matter Is of general Interest, and the latest reports go to show that it has been the experience of most other countries that Ihe epidemic recurred, and It behoves everyone to be a3 ready as possible for a recurrence if It comes along this winter. A full atlendanco of those interested Is asked for this meeting. We shall soon have the pleasure of extending a hearty welcome home to the following soldiers who are due In Pungarehu any time now: Lieut. G. McSaraney, M.M., D.C.M., Pri- i vate G. Noble (one of the Anzacs), Pte. P. Parrott, Pte. G. Nash, Pte. E. Barrett, Pte. i J. Baxter, Pte. A. Kirkpatrlck, Pte. M. Kelly and Pte. S. Taylor, who arrived recently, will be the first to receive an official welcome home from the residents of the district. We have only had one returned soldier so far to arrive In double harness, being Pte. I Armstrong. He not only had the luck to take part in beating the Germans, but he also beat the Home boys for a life partner as well. We all unite In wishing him and his better half the best of luck. Mr. and Mrs. Thomson have received irord that their son, Pte. I. Thomson, is expected to arrive in the Dominion about Monday next He will spend a short holiday with his parents hare before returning '.,-> civilian life. Excitement could bo said to exist here over the harbor loan poii, although the results of the voting showed that a few were certainly interested, and, like all other districts, the proposals were carried, a very meagre number dissenting. The arrangements for the polling were in the capable hands of Mr. W. H. Keasberry, returning officer. At the last meeting of the school committee the question of a social and dance was discussed, It being ultimately decided to have one this month, the prdceeds to be handed over to the school funds. It 1:, to be hoped their efforts will meet with the success which is due them.

I have again to draw tho attention of those Si e taat tne foot "a" season is at liand. What has become of Pungarehu sports? Tune was when this district boasted of an Athletic Club, Axemen's Association, etc., and by these means attracted attention to Pungarehu and its domain. Don't say we have no young men. They are there all right. Wake up, young fellows, and show what stuff you are made of, now the war is over I Why not try and get going once again? The farmers in this district are having a much easier time now, most of them only mtlkng their cow 3 once a day, and soon will be having a few weeks' spell, which they well

MIOHIRST. (From Our Own Correspondent). A meeting of the Mldhirst Settlers' Association Sports Committee was held on the 9th Inst. Mr. Ferguson, the chairman, In submitting the balance-sheet, remarked that he thought the conimHtee could congratulate themselves on the success of the meeting, and that arter paying all expenses there remained a credit balanqe without drawing on the original amount they had in hand. He credited this to several causes: The generous support of the public, large entries for the races, the good prozes for all events, and to the whole-hearted manner in which tho members of tho comSl™ 0 i a M W0 5 ked V a " d a,so t0 lhe assistance given on the day by several outside the committee.
