THE EGMONT MEETING. The weights declared for the above meeting appear to be framed on equitable lines, and good acceptances have heen received for aH events. Mr. Coyle has had some big fields to size up, and the general opinion seems to be that ha has done Ills work well: In the Mtßae .Memorial Handicap, Hydrus is weighted up to his best form, nnd Mullingar, with 3 lbs less, reads imwih better. form at Awapuni was good, and his owner not'growl at 8.10. Possibly Marqoeteur and Mullingar will be the early favorites. The Tawhiti Handicap bears an opecn appearance. Volo is reported to be very well, and is quite capable of carrying 9.3 with distinction. Inah should beat the improving Simonides at a'difference of only T lhs, and middle-weights Royal Chef «fld Ptoy 0(1 may have to be reckoned with- A good acceptance may he expected'in this event. Buvtpoa has all of 11.8 In the Tangahoe Hurseg, and Multi«pal,.Muaefcer, ss(l Royal Park are also weH in. /Hie Egmont Steeplechase shoUt3 be tire best race of the meeting, and the ftea entry has fully jastSßod its ineluaim. Arlington has a goed horse's weight, hut the wuntny is not cfiffleult, and'no may caury 11,4 well. Yellow and Black might be moxeat home over linger fenoea, out W »i-ifHKe to rusu well if staged. Ta--tesofhas-nat dane much Bore ihad races -thi? attirann, aed i<m» .It, Thpan may he fhe beat I of%e flggt-weighta, bat he is nofc in the flrst flight. If Arimftjw, Yellow and Biaok, ga & the freest they
\ will have moat to say in the finish. of 1 tli'e race. I The Hack and Hunters' Steeples looks | like a race between Kurnalpi and Mattock, though there are several promising I aspirants to big country honors in the field. Post Haste, Hallow, Cadet, and Signorella appear to be the best treated ones in the hack flat event*
TURF TOPICS (By "Moturoa") The most pleasing incident of Thurs- ! day's racing at Awapuui was the easy victory of the old favorite Desert Gold, in the Munawatu Stakes. Nicely ridden by Gray, she cut down the youngsters and ran in a comfortable winnor from her stable-mate Lucid. Warplane was unlucky in the race, his bridle slipping, and when they passed the post Roy Reed was treated to a spill. Hetaua ran a good race, as did Lady Ball, but the well-backed Amythas ran all over the course. Desert Gold came in for a great reception, and both owner, jockey, and mare deserved every bit of it. The big handicap drew a fine field, Gazique being a better favorite than Vagabond, with Nobleman, Marqueteur, and Tressida also in demand. Gazique and Marqueteur were early prominent, but Nobleman was rushed up from last to first at the four furlongs post, and led into the straight. Gray then brought Vagabond up, and the pair raced stride for stride to the post, Vagabond getting the verdict by a bare head. Marqueteur was a poor third, with Lovematcb nexrf;. The winner paid a remarkably good price, considering his easy victory on the first day.
The Borough Handicap was an even beiting race, good money being available for Demos, Chimera, Tigritiya, and Nystad. Demos and Tigritiya ran each other to a stand-still, when Chimera bobbed up and won easily. Most of the ''hads" went for Tigritiya. The minor races were well contested, and the public picked the winners feirly well. Master Lupin had the Kairanga Hurdles won a long way from home, but Hurry Up was hard pressed to beat Multaine in the Stonyhurst Welter. The Speaker was allowed to pay another false price in the Hack Welter, in which the favorite (Cadet) refused to gallop a yard- Murihilui won the Nursery from end to end, and Wonder did likewise in the Hack Flying. H. Gray rode six winners at the meeting. Bore, Post Haste, and Euripo3 reached Hawera on Thursday evening.
SASANOF. The Martian gelding Sasanof brought his racing campaign as a five-year-old to a triumphant conclusion at Awapuni on Wednesday, when ho won the Gold Cup (writes "Wairiki" in the Dominion). His success was all the more notable, as amongst the runners was Mr. T. H. Lowry's mare Desert Gold, who liad to he content with second place in a race that took 2min. 4 .'I-osee. to run—a record for New Zealand and just a fraction of a second outside the Australasian record (2min. 4ssec.). There seems to be quite a lot in H. Gray's statement that his defeat of Gloaming on Sasanof at Ricearton in November last was not a fluke. Wednesday's race seems to bear out Gray's statement, and it is safe to say that if Gloaming had been in the field the Australasian record would have come back to New Zealand. Sasanof up to date has started in forty-one races, and his record reads:
14 12 6 11 Stakes won, £17,890. Sasanof a« a yearling coat his owner, Mr. W. G. Stead, 400 guineas, and lie has turned out to be a rare bargain. This season the ge-lded son of Martian has won the following stakes:—
Won New Zealand Cup 1400 Third, Canterbury Cup 75 Won Stead Memorial Stakes .... 523 Second, Auckland Cup 500 Second, Islington Plate 100 Second, Porangahau Handicap, H.B. 35 Won Farewell Handicap, H.B 195 Third, Great Easter Handicap .. 130 Won Thompson Handicap 700 Won Trentham Gold Cup *BOO Won Awapuni Gold Cup *425 Total £4885 "Including cups valued £IOO each.
