WAITARA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) May 10. There seems to be rather a lack of interest in the work of arranging for peace celebrations, as there was only a very small attendance at the meeting of the peace celebration committee last evening, though this wa& to some extent due to the fact that the first meeting of the Harbor Board was also taking place. The ladies present said they had not finished collecting, and it was impossible to arrange for sports and other celebrations until the amount of money available was ascertained. The meeting was therefore adjourned until Tuesday, May 20. As I surmised, there were no nominations for the position of councillors, and it is rumored here that the present councillors are thinking of resigning their positions to see what will happen in that event. It is possible that should they tfesign it might induce enough persons to stand to form a council, but I think it is very doubtful. I am afraid that the borough is going to have trouble with its water mains before long, as four leaks have developed recently through the pipes rusting through. Captain Jensen, of Waitara, who has been living a retired life at home for some r.ime, has been commissioned to take the dredge Paritutu to Wellington for its annual overhaul. He is leaving immediately. I understand that Captain Jensen has other appointments on offer, which he may take after he has finished hi;; present trip. The football social held last night in the Clifton Hall was not very well patronised. Mr. J, Taylor supplied the music.
