(From Our Own Correspondent). _ „ Thursday, May 8. The first meeting of the newly elected Borough Council was held last evening, there being present: Mr. R. Morgan, who made the usual declaration and ..took his seat as mayor, and Messrs. E. C. Jones, W. R. Procter, and E. A. George, who also made the usual declarations and took their seat 3 as Councillors. The nominations close to-morrow for the four vacant seats on the Council, and so far no nominations have been received. It would appear as If the requisite number Is not going to be secured, which leaves things In a very anomalous position. There are just enough to carry on, but not enough to justify them in entering into new schemes for the betterment of the horough finances.
The business at the council meeting was chiefly the passing of the estimates and notice for 1919-20. The same rates as last year are being struck.
The matter of levelling the top of the hill In Stafford street, as asked for by the Clifton Football Club, with a view to Improving the grade and allowing the proposed memorial gates to be seen from the town, was referred to the SISS 8 ?. m eatlmate of the cost. It was decided to Instruct the Inspector to take steps to stop persons riding on the footpaths, and also to appeal to the public to help keep the town clean by depositing rubbish in the receptacles provided for It The mayor's honorarium wis fixed at 52 guineas per annum. The meeting night was fixed for the second Wednesday in the month after Juno meeting, which Is to be held on the first Wednesday in the month.
