THE WATERSIDERS.
•developments awaited with interest. (From Our Own Correspondent). Wellington, May 7. Developments in the waterside dispute are being awaited with interest. Representatives of the employers of waterside labor are to me.et in Wellington next week to eonsider the position created by the rejection by the union iof the offer of an increase of twopence per hour in wages'; making the rate 2s an hour. The original demand of the workers was for a wage well in excess of 2s and for other concessions that would have represented additional cost to the employers. It is known that some of the employers are strongly averse to making any further concession, but there are factors working the other way. The shipping- companies generally are controlled from beyond New Zealand, and to the boards of these companies an increase in the wages bill, to be paid by the people of New Zealand in one form or another, is of less importance than the quick despatch of ships. The chief argument advanced against a further concession is the probable effect upon wages generally in the Dominion.
