BLACK SPOT IN FRUIT.
AGRICULTURAL DEPARTMENT'S POLICY CRITICISED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, May 7. The policy of the Agricultural Department in regard to black spots in fruit was freely criticised at a meeting of Auckland fruit-growers to-day. It was stated that no consideration had been shown to growers, because of abnormal circumstances, such as the outbreak of the epidemic during the spraying season and the very high advance in the cost of materials. The opinion was expressed that it was practically impossible to eliminate the pest. When the weather and other circumstances were favorable it could be got under, but in the following season, when the circumstances wercr unfavorable, the fruit was in worse state than ever The opinion was also expressed that fruit should not be condemned when the proportion of spotted fruit was below a reasonable standard. It was also resolved to ask the Railway Department to endeavor to improve the methods of handling and carrying the fruit.
