GROWING POPULARITY OF TROTTING. MORE TOTALISATOR PERMITS REQUIRED.

Christchurch, Last Night. Mr. Selig, president of the New Zealand Trotting Association, at a meeting of the hoard to-day, made a lengthy reference to the position of elubs all over the Dominion in respect of totalisator permits. He pointed out that for some time the association had the subject under review, and, had appointed representatives from amongst the hoard to report as to the requirements of their district. They had been working, but now that the Minister for Tnterna.l .Affairs (Hon. G. W., Russell) had recognised that the sport of trotting should be further encouraged in his recent remarks by more totalisator assistance, lie (Mr. Selig) was of opinion that the association should at once take steps to endeavor to secure further permits. The sport was still growing in the affection of the people, as was evidenced by the large attendances at meetings. It was absolutely necessary that there should he an increased number of permits, so that the clubs who had none should have the assistance that they merited. In the South and in the North Islands, both from meetings' and the sporting point of view, more permits were necessary to enable clubs to cater for the interests of the sport. Trotting clubs originally had been deprived of three permits that should have been available for them, and. apart from these, the sport of trotting had undoubted claims for further totalisator support. He suggested that representations should he at once nmde to the authorities. The president's remarks were supported by all member-, and it was resolved that the president, vicepresident, and Mr. Short bo a committee to go to Wellington and confer with the executive of the New Zealand Trotting Conference and the New Zealand Sports Protection League, and form a new deputation to interview Cabinet.

Under the rules of .trotting adopted last August, the new mode of election of members of the trotting association was brought into conference to-day. The president explained that three South Island members retired at the end of the season, and had to be decided by lot. It was suggested that the names of the members should be placed in a hat and that the president should draw three. The first he drew was his own, then Messrs Kitchingham and Thomson, and these arc eligible for re-election and, it is understood, will be re-nominated. In the discussion on the case of a driver who had twice started before his time, complaint was made of the present unsatisfactory starting system. Tt was unanimously decided to recommend the conference to adopt the yards system.
