STRATFORD.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) (All communications, letters, etc., left with Mr H. J. Hopkins, bookseller, will receive prompt attention.) Although the strength of the Stratford Fire Brigade is not much in membership, in cases of emergency they can always rely on generous assistance from the public. This morning's fire was no exception, and in this connection it was pleasing to see many ex-firemen fill the breech, who, with their experience, greatly assisted in eventually securing control. Some spectators fliought that the water supply was hardly up to expectations, but those with knowledge of fire-fighting state that the supply was extremely good. The attitude of the Borough Council ia regard to th* sites on which the Are occurred will be interesting. At present these sites do not come under the borough by-laws, and twelve months ago we had the spectacle of badly-gutted premises being patched up, and the council was powerless to interfere The leases, however, have only fourteen months to run, and perhaps some compensation may be allowed and the leases terminated immediately. If this proves correct, and the land becomes freehold, the buyers should be keen, as the site is in the heart of the business jportion of the town. A farewell social is to be given Mr. and Mrs. M. T. Phillips and family. in the Bird Road schoolroom, on Monday next. They are old and highly respected residents who have always been ready to help when it was needed. There is a cold snap approaching. Don't bother about the breezes or the frost, but call at C. E. James' warehouse and look at the fine parlor games he has for the children, and for dad he has the best brands of cigars and also tobacco, with the best of pipes to smoke his favorite mixture. For mother there is a great variety of reading matter, so why not be cheerful and contented, and all for a little cost; but remember you can get it at C E. James'.—Advt I
