TARANAKI TEACHERS' INSTITUTE.
■«■ GENERAL MEETING. A general meeting of Uiei Taranakl branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute was held at Stratford on Saturday. Mr. W. A. Curteis presided over a fair attendance of members. Mr. Insull, from the Auckland branch, was welcomed to Taranakl. Ten new members were- elected. Correspondence was read, from the Education Department enclosing new regulations; from Mrs. Poole, resigning her membership and thanking the. Institute for its assistance in her legal case; and from the Otago branch, Inquiring re soldier teachers returning to duty last November; and re-appointment of teachers, about which there Is a great deal of dissatisfaction at the present time. Mr. Curteis proposed that this institute place .on record Its high appreciation of the very valuable services rendered to the institute and education generally by Mrs. Dowling, late head teacher of West End school, and conveys to her Its best wishes for her future welfare. Seconded by Mr. Stratford and supported by Messrs. Tyrer and Slm3, and carried by acclamation. Mr. R. Masters attended the meeting as a Reputation from the Taranakl Rugby Union, to enlist the support of teachers In encouraging football in the schools. Ee asked the institute to appoint a representative to the Union. Mr. G. Lyail was appoined, on the motion of Mr. Tyrer, seconded by Mr. Bary, Mr. Sims proposed that the next meeting be held at Normanby, to enable members to visit the new school recently erected there. Seconded by Mr. T. Thomas, and carried. Mr. Sims proposed that the annual subscription be reduced to 15s. Seconded by Mr Howarth and carried. l^*. tford Proposed that the executive of the N.Z-EX be asked to issue a pamphlet containing more details of the proposals for educational reform. Seconded by Mr. J. W. Thomas and carried. Mr. Howarth. proposed that the Education Board bo asked to. make arrangements for some of our women teachers to visit other centres in order to study the latest methods In Infant teaching. Seconded by Mr. Sini3 and carried It was mentioned that Taranakl is behind other districts in methods of Infant teaching, and that visits to other cenres would be productive of good. Moreover, the buildings in this district are not suitable for Montessorl methods.
