DISTRICT NEWS.

WAI-TOI-TOI. (From Our Own Correspondent). A very successful dance was held in the Urenui hall on Thursday evening last, arranged by a number of the territorials in the district. The ha)! was fairly well filled and all present enjoyed themselves thoroughly. Under the capable management of Mr George as M.C. lire dancers were kept going, and there were no "waits." Miss A. Terrill acted as pianist, and left nothing to be desired in that respect. During the evening a nice little supper was handed round and done full justice to by those present. On Friday evening the Rev. Perkins gave an address in the schoolroom to the young folks of the district. There was a good attendance, including a sprinkling ;of adults. The reverend gentleman chose for his subject "The Light of the World," and gave a most interesting and lucid description of Holman Hunt's wonderful picture. His youthful audience evidently thoroughly appreciated the speaker's remarks, and his fortnightly visits are looked forward to with much interest. During the evening several hymns were sung, Mr Perkins acting as organist. The milk supply to the local factory is rapidly falling. Most of the farmers are "drying off" their cows, and the factory is now starting to r,un every other day. Though there has been a fairly good supply of autumn feed, some of the settlers are likely to be fully taxed to get through the winter, as there have been practically no sales of weaner calves owing to the extremely low prices offering for this class of stock, caused, no doubt in a great measure, by buyers having had to hold their "fats" for such a long period through the lack of space in the freezing works. There is also a reluctance on the-part of dealers to go in for young stock at big prices till something definite is known as to what the market is likely to be in a year or so, Mr Jas. Phillips, the chairman of the local dairy company, accompanied by Mrs Phillips, is at present away on a holiday trip to the north of Auckland. The shooting season was openad last week, and, judging by the reports of the guns, there was something doing in this vicinity. There arc' a fair amount of birds about, but they seem to have a happy knack of sitting very close, and it takes a decent sort of a dog to shift them.
