WAITARA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.), Waitara, May 6. . A revival of football is being experienced in Waitara, and it would seem as if Waitara was going to be as formidable an opponent in the football arena as she has always been. Great interest is being displayed, and a trial match between two teams from which the Benior team is to be selected is to take place on Thursday next, and to judge by the number of players to select from a good team should result. A special meeting of the Chamber of Commerce w*as held on Monday evening, for the purpose of considering the question of purchasing a suitable vessel to trade to the port. I understand that such a one is under offer, and the meeting was called to consider the advisability of forming a company to purchase her. Mr. S. D. George, our local plumber, has purchased the house owned and erected by Mr. W. Andrew, and which has been unoccupied since Mr. Andrew left the town. I understand the price was about £650. Mr. J. Rennie, who secured the order for football jerseys for the Clifton Club, nas made a most attractive display of the boots, jerseys and pants worn by the different grades of players. The centre of the window is occupied by a figure in full football uniform, and altogether it is a most attractive display. The Taranaki Amusements are giving half the proceeds of a picture entertainment towards the memorial gate which it is proposed to erect at'.the entrance to the Camp Reserve in Brown Street. A meeting of returned soldiers is being! held to-night in the Fire Brigade station to insider the establishment of a branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association here; also a club room. Nominations for the four vacancies on the Borough Council close at noon onFriday, but no interest seems to be taken, and I doubt very much if the positions will be filled. It is a crying shame that in a town of this size there are not more public-spirited men to take an interest in the welfare of the borough,
