SYDNEY TURF ITEMS. \ ■ Received May 5, 10.5 p.m. Sydney, May 5. Refraction, a yearling sister to gloaming, wau passed in at auction at 1900 guineas. O'Shsa, a New Zealand jockey, is seriously ill from influenza. There is considerable comment in sporting circles over the disqualification of F. Denipsey for two months for cribbing a post position at Moonee Valley meeting. TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") Trentham invariably looks at its best in the autumn, and certainly no fault could be found with the general appearance of things there last week. The weather was mild and sunny; fields good and horses of the best; and the course was like lightning. There was a good crowd there each day, though nothing compared to when the camp adjoining was in full swing and some four thousand soldiers usually attended. An excellent train service made the task of getting there and back an easy and inexpensive one, and it was a pleasure to be relieved of the robbery of the motor car brigands. The appointments are very fine, the stands and totalisator easily accommodating the crowds of sportsmen ancLiheir money. The Wit.C, has everythingright up to the moment, with the exception of the jockeys' board, which might easily be fitted with attachments to hold figures denoting positions at the post, overweights, and allowances. The catering was fair, but the booth was a temperance affair, though the number of ''empties" left on the ground showed that sportsmen, like the wise virgins, believed in coming prepared with ''ammunition." There were a fair number of khaki-clad veterans in evidence; also a good number in hospital blue, but, for a change, Tuentham Camp slept peacefully, undisturbed by the rattle of artillery, musketry, or the incessant bugle calls. The presence of Gloaming, Sasanof, Afterglow, Star Lady, Affectation, and other good performers raised the gathering above the ruck of usual autumn meetings, but regrets were expressed at the absence of Desert Gold. Sasanof was the hero of the meeting, and his two performances there were simply great. On his Thompson Handicap form he would prove a doughty opponent for Gloaming over a mile, while his trouncing of the greatly-improved Afterglow in the Gold Cup stamps him as the best two-miler of recent years. To win a Melbourne Cup and a New Zealand Cup is a unique performance, but the handsome son of Martian and Ukraine retains his staying power as few other Cup winners have done, and, in addition, can .sprint with the best of them. Gloaming was unfortunate in his only essay, but Afterglow ran her best race to date in the St. Leger. Star Lady and Affectation ran gamely enough, but both appear to be feeling the effects of their gruelling racing of the past few months. Sasanoffs Thompson Handicap victory was a thing to be remembered. Burdened with 9.9, there were many who would not have him, and pointed to the fact that only twice in the history of the race had that weight been borne to victory. One had to go 'way back to 1901, when Boreas carried that weight home in front of ten others, and to 1898, when our own little champion, Waiuku, triumphed for the third time, carrying in that memorable year 10.3 in a field of nine. That Sasanof is as good as, if not better than that pair must be admitted, for not only did he win with 9.9, but he ran the eight furlongs in the remarkable time of Imin, 38sec, and that after getting anything but a smooth passage. The public's elect was Spanner, who had a pull of nearly two stone in the weights, and the Auoklander ran right up to his best form. Sasanof was blocked twice, and between four and five furlongs from home was knocked back from third to eighth. Spanner was many lengths in front at this stage, and looked unbeatable. Gray then sat down to ride the top-weight, and, making up his ground in fine style, he joined Spanner 150 yards from home, and won cleverly by a good neck. Rude was a moderate third, but had no chance with the dividend-payers. Vagabond, Nystad. and Nobleman came next, but the chief disappointment was Glendower. who carried the tapes with him in the early stages. The very ordinary looking Punka was well placed at the half mile, but could not go the pace. Marqueteur was quite outclassed, but was not the only one out of place in such a fine field. Glendower's turn came on the second day, when, over three more furlongs of ground, he just beat another Southerner (Heathercote), after a slashing finish.

Acre has always had the reputation of being a second day horse, and the Fordell sprinter lived up to his reputation both at Feilding and at Trenthnm. In the Railway Handicap on Thursday he was the public's elect, and. considering that the field included horses like Waimatoa, Torfreda, Killowen, Demos, BoPeep. etc.. he was highly rated. Acre probably covered a trifle more ground than his opponents, but he was rightup with Torfreda and Waimatoa as they crossed the gap to the straight proper, and then failed to run out. Waimatoa stayed on best, but had not much to spare from 80-Peep, who was well out of it in the early stages On Saturday there was a different talo to tell, however, as Acre finished with great determination, and beat an equally good field. The winner'paid a handsome price, showing how quickly the general public are apt to drop a horse, though several shrewd punters benefited considerably by the Linacre colt's improved form.

"Jim" Bull dearly loves to spring a new hurdler upon the public, but the "hard heads" went solidly for (he latest Bulls nroduction, Yankee Jack, each day. and the bay son of 'Frisco and Willow Bank not only made hacks of his oppon-,

ents, but ran his races in slashing time. His mile and three-quarters in 3min. 12 3-ssec. is probably .a record for the Dominion, and few horses could equal his 2miii. 44see. for the mile and a half. Yankee Jack is engaged in the principal jumping events this winter, and should bo heard of again. His party had a "royaler" at Trentlyim. "He has to fall down to lose" was the verdict regarding Gloaming's prospects in the Challenge Stakes, and, just to show the uncertainty of racing, Gloaming did fall. It was a remarkable occurrence, acid regrettable from the standpoint that an unplaced performance goes down in the record of a champion. As the quartette fidgeted at the post the favorite snatched the rising barrier in his teeth, reared, aud lame down heavily, throwing Deeley violently to the ground. Deeley was temporarily stunned, but soon came round. The horse was found to have struck himself both fore and aft,;and was very lame on his return to the birdcage. This mishap will keep him from racing at Awapuni this week, where a meeting between the Greenwood crack and Sasanof promised to be a trump-drawing card. With Gloaming's downfall, Affectation was left in command in the Challenge Stakes, and he led Printemps and Warplane to the distance, where L. Morris brought the latter along with a fine run and won on the post by a bare halflength. The result was a body blow to the "dry" punters, but those who go for "long shots" were sent on their way rejoicing with a great dividend for a four-horse race.

The system of paying out at Trentham is one that might be tried by other clubs. A large number of windows are set apart for the payment of single tickets, a lesser number of windows being respectively reserved for holders of two, three, and large numbers of winning tickets. In this way tickets are cashed quickly, with less rial: of error, and the abomination of persons coming upon the lijind side and begging others to collect for them is almost obviated. The system is one to be commended.

Spanner was purchased by Mr. Richmond on Friday last, the figure mentioned b»insr in the region of 3000 guineas. Mr. Richmond recently bought Surveyor for 200!) guineas, and the pfir will probably be Riven a chance to distinguish themselves in 'Stralia.

Sonino is now a member nf J. Avre's team, having been purchased by the well known Wellinjrton sportsman who races as "Mr. Lance Wood."

"Moturoa" aokn<n'ded<res receipt of tickets for the Manavntu ft.C. autumn and Kgmont P.C. winter meetings. The Mansiwatu meetin.tr takes place or. Wed. nesdny and Thursday, and, judging by the excellent acceptances received for the r.peninsr day, the gathering should he a most successful one. WnVfcts for the. Kgumnt meeting are due on Friday, and acceptances clo3e on Saturday even-
