BAPTIST SOCIAL CLUB.

The Baptists of the local church are to be congratulated on the successful inauguration of their social club. The leaders have for some time past been aware of the need for a society combining all phrases of the social side of life, not neglecting the spiritual, and decided to form a club and mutual improvement society. The club will be known as "The New Plymouth Baptist Church Mutual Improvement and Literary Society." The programme arranged for the season is a very attractive one, comprising evenings with poets, missionaries, Shakespeare, darkies, children, returned soldiers, surprises, questions, Victorian novelists, Pardeil versus, Pickwick, etc. The officers for the year are: Patrons: Rev. A. C. Seivewright and Mr. G. H. Maunder; president, Mr. E. G. Johnson; treasurer: Mr. F. G. Northern; secretary: Miss 0. Campbell; committee: Misses Elliott, May Gillespie and Shepherd. The programme presented to a large audience on Thursday night was a very interesting and varied one. The firßt was devoted to partner finding, a'fter ■which the president officially opened the club. He explained the object and aims of the promoters. Then the following items were given:—Pianoforte solo, Miss Coleman; musical monologue, Mr. Smith (encored); smelling competition; song, Miss Campbell (encored); Mrs. Candler's curtain lecture, Mrs. Hoby and Mr. Johnson, this Jtem showing the sufferings of the poor henpecked husband, caused roars of laughter; hatmaking competition; song, Mr. Johnson; musical monologue, Mr. Smith (double encored): recitation, Mrs. Elliott; song, with effect, "The House that Jack Built," Mrs. Hoby's troupe.

Mr. Smith, of Auckland, a member of the church, is in New Plymouth on |ti holiday and the committee are greatly indebted to Mm for his very humorous items. Supper brought a very glad and profitable evening to a close.
