DECREASE IN BANKRUPTCIES. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. The number of bankruptcy petitions filed with the Official Assignee in Christchurch has been considerably reduced, comparatively speaking, since the cessation of hostilities. During 1917 there were 32 petitions, involving large sums of money. In 1918 there were 10, while from January to the present time only five—of a class involving smaller amounts —have been lodged. There have been two bankruptcies on the whole of the west coast during the past twelve months. WOODVILLE COURT CASES. Woodville, Last Night. Before Mr, Free, S,M., Alfred Walshaw, licensee of the Masonic Hotel, was charged with exposing liquor for sale during prohibited .hours, and was fined £5 and -costs 7s. Two others were each fined 20s and 7s costs for being on licensed premises after hours, the case arising out of the previous one. •T. Meredith, milk vendor, was charged with idding water to milk, and was lined £5 with costs 10s lOd. This is the second case against milk vendors; the previous one was fined £2O. A PRISONER'S ESCAPE. Dunedin, Last Night. While a young man named Arthur Leo Beon Ashton, who was sentenced to two years' reformative treatment, was being \ taken to Invercargill to-day he leapt from the carriage near Edcndale and escaped into the bush. So far he has not been recaptured. FORGED NOTES. Dunedin, Last Night. It is understood that some of New Zealand 10s notes have been circulated in Dunedin.
