The Wellington Racing Club's autumn meeting opens to-day, and will be concluded on Saturday. Taken all round, the acceptances are good, and the presence of such horses as Gloaming, Desert Gold, Sasanof, Star Lady, Affectation, Afterglow, Punka, Nobleman, Waimatao, Acre, etc., gives promise of splendid sport. The Trentham track is reported ' to be at, its best.. Sasanof appears to be likely to start a firm favorite in the Thompson Handicap though plenty of money is flying about for Spanner and Rebekah. The bar vons, to judge by the latest charts, give nothing a chance outside this trio, and they may be right. Sasanof has a big weight (9.9), and, judging by Easter form, he will be very busy giving 251bs to Spanner and 301bs to Rebekah. '-On paper Spanner looks the pick of the handicap. The Railway Handicap has only drawn a moderate field, and Acre may hold/the top-weights safe. He ran well each day at Feilding, and appears to have benefited by Easter racing. Taunaha and Deinoa •.have a good pull in the weights, and the Fordell sprinter will not have much, to spare with that speedy pair in the field . Papanui has a much more moderate field to meet to-day than lie accounted for at Feilding, and promises to start & warm order in the hurdles. • The Plunket Nursery bears an open appearance, but Amythas lias been galloping in great style, and with C. Price in the saddle the Fordell two-year-old will certainly run well. Red Pepper may prove the best of the light-weights. The Silversti'eam will bring out a number of seasoned sprinters, and, if not bril- , liant, Risingham, The Speaker, Tprchlight and Cooing arc certainly consistent, Risingham may be the fittest of .'th« quartette. If three hard races at Feilding have not affected Black Mark, the Marton-traitad horse should handle 7.12 with distinction in the Tinakori Handicap. Wonder is another that can go very fast over the distance. Gloaming and Star Lady will monopoSse attention in the classic events.
