BOROUGH OFFICERS.
To the Editor. : Sir, —Being a ratepayer for over forty years, I see they are worked ao hard in the borough office that the council Is advertising for another junior clerk. When is this going to stop? It will soon be as bad as Wellington, where the civil servants leave their offices by the hundreds. Now, Mr. Editor, why has our borough never published the number of servants engaged, and the "screw" they get ? It costs more to run this little office than it does New York. No wonder ratepayers are going in for unimproved value. Here we are, can't get a decent? footpath to our door, as a very large portion of our rates goes in office expense, and yet you seem to back them up. We had a large signed petition by the ratepayers of Cameron Street last summer to do up our footpaths before the winter set in, but it is not done yet, nor is It likely to, because his Worship the Mayor says we don't want it 0' course what his Worship says much be rl"ht' as lam the "boss rooster." Now, I should Tike to know what he knows about it. It was a very fine, dry day when his Highness paid a visit to tills street, so, of course, he says we don't want anything. I should like him to take a walk through this street when if, Is raining hard; it would soon 'be done. Then, of course the worst part is the council is to be led by one .man. Why was this petition thrown on one side, and 110 notice taken of It—thrown only by oae man, his Worship, and he says we don't want it. So much for his opinion, so r won't say any more now.—l am, etc., RATEPAYER.
