Whangarei, April 28. Cecil Edward Gillett, aged 17 years, met his death in the Wairua River on Sunday morning. He was skylarking with three others in a Maori canoe, which capsized. Gillett was unable to swim, and was drowned. His companions reached the shore safely. His body has been recovered. THE GASWORKS FATALITIES. Wellington, Last Night. At the inquest on John Ferrel and Joseph Churchill, killed at the gasworks on Saturday, the coroner (Mr. F. V. Frazer) found that the evidence showed that the portion of the crane which was carried away had been examined prior to its erection, a month ago, and that the gas company's engineer had satisfied himself as to its soundness. His Worship added that this was his formal finding. In view of the possibility of civil proceedings, he had left the finding just slightly indefinite. RETURNED SOLDIER INJURED. Christchurch, Last Night. This afternoon a returned soldier named Flynn fell from a moving tram-car in Worcester Street, and suffered such injuries to his right arm that it had to be amputated. A CURIOUS ACCIDENT. Christchurch, Last Night. Mary Mitchell, aged eight, a pupil at Cashmere Hills School, suffered a severe injury to her head this afternoon, owing to the school bell breaking away from its fastenings and falling on her. The exact nature of the injury is unknown, but her condition is serious. , A SAILOR DROWNED. Napier, Last Night. Michael McDonald, an elderly sailor just signed off the Kouftmui, was drowned in the Iron Pot, Port Ahuriri, this afternoon. He misjudged the' distance between the railway trucks and a vessel. He was recovered almost instantly by a stevedore named Fitzgibbon, but was dead when brought on to the wh«rf.
