ANZAC DAY.
LONDON PROCEEDINGS. TEIBUTES TO THE ANZACS. London, April 25. Mr. W. M. Hughes, Sir Joseph Cook, and Mr. Pearce made speeches from the stage of Hie Majesty's Theatre. They paid tributes to the heroism of the Anzacs. Mr. Pearce promised the men something more substantial than hand-elap-ping when they returned to Australia. Mr. Hughes, dealing with the problems of reconstruction, said he was delighted to see the way the Australian soldiers dealt with the Brisbane "Bolshies." Mr. Hughes, addressing another body of Australians, wished them a speedy and safe return. He regretted that he could not yet accompany them, because, although the war was over, the Peace Conference now going on bade fair to be longer, if not bloodier, than the war.— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Ass'n. The Manchester Guardian, in a leader, says: "Australasia, proportionately to her population, is the most accomplished and formidable Power in the world. All ranks of the Australian and New Zealand troops have extraordinary military qualities, and General Monash is one of the most skilful of the generals of the Allies. His staff and divisional commanders displayed exceptional capacity in the encirclement and. capture of Villers Brettoneux. This was a masterpiece of design and execution. We should acknowledge frankly that the Australasion troops are superior to Britain's on the average. This is due to the Australasian social, economic, and political iife, which is more favorable for the production of high vitality, self-reliance, and resource than our obsolete village feudalism and crude factory system. "Australasia possesses an army of skilled veterans, with as many glorious names on their colors as the British regiments which fought throughout the Napoleonic wars."
