After converting some 70 tons or so of white iron into marketable grey foundry iron in a period of about a" week, the management of the ironworks at Moturoa had to close down on Thursday last owing to the unsuitability of the coke supplies. It will be remembered that in January last, after smelting about 30 tons of iron, the furnace had to be blown out for want of fuel to carry on. Since then it was decided to try gas coke, of which supplies were obtainable,, but which is not usually considered hard enough for blast furnace purposes. A supply was obtained, and it served fairly well for converting the white iron into grey, a very excellent quality of foundry iron being the result. But when the furnace was charged with raw sand it was found that the coke was too soft and friable, with the result that there was a danger of cold hearth trouble. Nevertheless, a quantity of grey iron was obtained by the direct process, but the management realised that the gas coke was not suitable, and consequently decided to &ose down pending an arrangement for obtaining constant supplies, of hard coke. The experience, so far from being discouraging, has confirmed the expert's opinion that he can smelt the sand and obtain good grey iron by process and make it a commercial success. Tho difficulty to be overcome is that of obtaining regular and sufficient supplies of hard coke, and while the present great shortage of coal OQBtiBuM this U a vees iral difficulty.
