Sneaking of the popularity of trotting in this Canterbury district, the Hon. G. W. Russell to-day remarked that one could not coma to the courses in Christchurch without realising the tremendous hold this branch of sport hqd upon the people of Canterbury, and no doubt this resulted from the most efficient and honorable conduct which had marked the Canterbury Trotting. Clubs throughout their career. A question was being raised whether it was possible to give facilities for the increase of the sport in the North Islar.d, For example, in Wellington, the Trotting Club had only one day in the year, and there were many important North Island districts which were entirely unrepresented. Mr. Russell hardly thought the trotting enthusiasts of th-: Dominion would he prepared to allow this state of affairs to continue. The difficulty was -tp see a -way out.. It would bo' of little use to surest to those who.had racing pernjjts that.they should make a sacrifice in order that an equal number- of trotting permits might be issued as cotapared with galloping. On the other hand, he had grave doubts whether it would be wise to go to Parliament, for an extension of the number of permits, a district wishing to- establish- trotting might consider it worth while £o communicate with the Government through their members with a view to securing the increase is ,the number of permits necessary to equalise the two branches -of sport. At present the public accepted the totalisator as a .necessary part of public life. The object of the administration for years hn.jl been to try and prevent grievances on the part of tlic public, and this was one of the primary causes of the appointment of the totalisator experts, who had now been appointed permanently. The question might be asked of candidates at the coming election whether thev would assist in raising the number of totalisator permits for trotting to equal those for galloping, as it could not be done without legislation. CURTAILMENT OF RACING. STATEMENT BY MINISTER. Christchurch, April 2l>. £rmic mm ark a explaining the position .which had arisen in connection with the curtailment of racing in 1017 were made by the Hon. (1. W Russell to-day. Mr. Russell said that when the curtailment of racing was made in lftli on account of the war. the question was raised as to the assistance of those clubs which had fullered financial loss by those, which had n»t. There were two classes of clubs 'which suffered, those that were prohibited from holding meetings, and those whose meetings were reduced. The matter wm discussed between, the two branches of the sport represented by ;Sir Geo. Olifiord, president of the RacingConference, and the Gdvernment. The principal question was whether the clubs that continued their meetings and made a profit should assist those that were unable to pay the interest on their mortgages and to maintain their courses nroperly. The question how this was to be done was left to the racing and trotting conferences. The Government made no suggestion whatever. Tt was intended that the club which lo«t il(s profits throua'h the curtailment of racing should be assisted, or that there should be a general distribution of profits by the clubs (hat. continued race meetings. The onlv question vas whether the clubs that were unable to pay their way should be assisted. . -J- ' .
