A young woman named Alice Kemp appeared before Mr. A. Crooke, S M., on Saturday morning to answer a charge of behaving in a disorderly manner near the New Plymouth railway station on Friday afternoon. Sub-Inspector Hutton, who prosecuted, said accused had arrived by the train the previous evening. The next day she had gone into the streets and, finding no shops open and very few people about, and feeling lonely, had jone into a hotel to have a "spot" The Magistrate professed ignorance as to what a "spot" was. and explanations were made by the sub-inspector. Accused evidently had more than was good for her, and went down the town insulting passers-by, even going the length of pulling down the hair of another young woman, and, without any provocation, slapping a wharf laborer on the face. Consequently a crowd gathered about her and she became the subject of much interest and curiosity t Accused when arrested had 13s fid in her possession. Tn reply to the. Magistrate accused said she had conie to New Zealand from Svdnev. She undertook light work in a hotel or marble bar. She had been enaaged in Palrrierston North and proposed to go buck there. She stated she had sufficient to pay her fare in her boy at the railway station. Accused was convicted and discharged and ordered to pay us expenses incurred in searching tier.
