Mr. and Mrs. F, Cave, highly respected residents of Wanganui, celebrated their golden wadding last week.

Mrs. F. E. Millr, has received' ndvice that her son, Corporal S. A. Mills, 28,172, will arrive in Wellington by the Northumberland on May 9. - Advice has been received that Sergt. ■ Ken Blundell, D.C.M., 18th Reinforcements, is due in New Zealand by the Northumberland on. May 9.

The Prince of Wales has been elected a member of the Jockey Club. Jt is reported that he will shortly become a freemason, the Duke of Cormaught conducting his initiation. Mr. R. Gilbert, of Ilnrwortli, has received word that his eldest son, Sergeant l._ C. Gilbert, is due to arrive home by the Northumberland on May !). Corporal G. B. C. Burne, sou of Mrs. W. l! Card, of Upper Carriugton Road, is expected to arrive on April 28. Corporal Burne was wounded some time ago, and since his recovery has been engaged in demobilisation work in England. The Rev. Mr. Blair waa the recipient of a purse of sovereigns from his parishioners at Kaponga on the eve of his departure for Petone. The Rev. G. B. llinton succeeds Mr. Blair.

Lieut. J. G. Grant, V.C., of Hawera, hopes to be leaving England in April on his return home. At the date of writing (March 7) he was at Walton-on-Thamea Hospital. Capt. William Hapdham, V.C., has been awarded the Colonial Auxiliary Forces Long Service Medal. He has served for over twenty years in the forces.

The Napier Mayoralty, will be contested at the coming municipal elections by Mr. Vigor Brown, M.P., and Mr. H. Hill, the present Mayor. Mr. Brown had, up to the last Mayoral elections in Napier, been Mayor of the town for a number of years. According to advices received from Sydney, Harry Lauder, the famous Scotch comedian, was to have left America for Sydney on April 8, so that he is due to arrive there during the first week in May. A Milan (Italy) cable states that the Grand Duke Nicholas, ex-Generalissimo of Russia, has arrived at Genoa, and is proceeding to the Riviera, and that the Dowager ex-Empress of Russia proceeds to London as the guest of Queen Alex-andria.—Aus.-N.Z. Paymaster-Lieut. A. N. Field, R.N.V.R., son of Mr. T. A. H. Field, M.P. for Nelson, has obtained his release, after more than two years' service with the Navy, the last year with destroyers in the North Sea. He is now doing journalistic work in London for a few months prior to returning to New Zealand.

Mr. P. J. O'Regan, of Wellington, who has been assisting the New Plymouth advocates of the rating on unimproved values system, took the opportunity while in Taranaki of visiting relations in Kaponga and of noting the development of South Taranaki's farming industries.

The passing of the last of the pioneers of the Lower Rangitikei, in the person of Mrs. Annie McDonnell, occurred on Wednesday morning. The deceased lady will be sincerely mourned, especially by those to whom she was such a friend in the days of long ago. It is afar cry to the year IS4'O, when she landed in New Zealand on the ship Blenheim. She was a member of one of the Cameron families or band, and, to distinguish her family from the others, tbey were known as the Pip?;- Camerons.

A veteran of the Maori War, who was wounded at Eangiriri and invalided home to England, is stated to be still on the books of the West Yorkshire Regiment, and drawing his pension. His name is John Carroll, and he is stated to have seen a lot of service during the Maori War before he was wounded at Rangiriri. The old man is now in his 108 th year. He enlisted in the 14th Foot, now the West Yorkshire Regiment, as far back as 1554, and went through the Crimean War before coming out to New Zealand. It is not quite certain whether Carroll was born in 1810 or 1811.
