WAITARA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Waitara, April 22. / From a financial point of viesv the fire brigade social held last night was an unqualified success. Over £l2 was taken at the doors and the Clifton Hall was overcrowded. The ladies who helped to get the social up are to be complimented on the excellent supper provided, and I think everyone ahd a good time. When anything out of the ordinary comes along it always bring; into prominence the need of a larger hall The number of people who were present last night could have comfortably filled a hall twice the size of the Clifton Hall, when it would have been much more enjoyable even than it was. The Maori who was before the court some few weeks ago for assaulting youths from the post office and railway was again brought up yesterday on a charge of assault in the Masonic Hotel. He was lined £3 and costs. The s.s. Arapawa, which arrived here on Thursday last, came too late for the tide, and had to proceed to New Plymouth, where she discharged her cargo. There has been a good deal of talk here recently about boats not Tunning more frequently to Waitara, and it strikes one as rather peculiar that the first time a boat comes here for some weeks she is unable to get in on account of the bar. Mr. J. Betts, who has been stationed here for some time, has been notified of hiß transfer to Wanganui. He leaves for his new homo ?ome time this week. Religious services are to he held on Friday to commemorate Anzac Day, and in the afternoon the Viand is to head a procession of school children from the school to the Theatre Royal, where songs are to be sung hv the children and some short speeches made. At 3 o'clock a football match is to start on the Camp Ttc-'erce between returned soldiers and local bovs, and from what one can learn of the personnel of the two teams it promises to be a good game-
