VESSEL STRIKES A REE* , By Telegraph.— Press Association Wellington, Last Nign'A While endeavoring to enter port last night, the steamer Bessa struck * rock. _ It web at first thought the vessel had entered Chaffers* Passage by mistake, but it is now understood that she was ( in the main channel, and that the jort side struck the outer edge of Barwt'a Reef. Water at first made slow headway, but about 11 pjn. there seemed a danger of the vessel sinking in the stream, so she Was berthed at Queen's Wharf immediately. The damage fa not so extensive as was originally thought, the divers' preliminary investigation merely disclosing that some rivst* tad started. The engine room pumps are holding the water, and the vessel is still off the bottom. The cargo is being u* loaded to lighten the ship. The cargo included 1100 tons for Wellington, the remainder being for Australian ports.
