PERSONAL.
Mr. F. E. Wilson intimated to the meeting of ratepayers held on Thursday night that he would not contest the Mayoralty against Mr. C H. Burgess. Lieut. Gideon Pott, M.C, Who returned to New Zealand on the WiUochr*, arrived in New Plymouth on Wednesday evening.
Private R. D. Spence, son of Mr. Geo. Spence, Omata, who left with the 9th Reinforcements, •returned to New Plymouth last night. Mr. J. H. Smith, of Hnirangi, has received word from Sir Jamas Allen that his son, Corporal F. R, Smith, has received the Croix-de-Guerre, for gallantry in the field of action.
Major R. H. Woodhouss, D.8.0.; NX M.C., has cabled to say that ha has accepted the position of medical superintendent of the Wellington General Hospital, and will arrive in New Zealand from England as soon as possible. Major Woodhouse was formerly house surgeon at the hospital, and later was actmgmedical superintendent in the absence of Dr. Hardwick-Smith.
Mr. A. Hansen, engineer to the Wftlmate West County Council, left on Thursday morning for tie Auckland district, where he will report on the roads in the Mangonui and Thames Counties, for the respective county councils, representatives of each having reetntly toured Taranaki in connection with their roadisg improvement schemes. Mr. Hansen expects to be away a fortnight.
