INDUSTRIES COMMITTEE AT AUCKLAND, By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. The Industries Committee commenced its Auckland sittings to-day. Mr. A. J. Kemp, representative of the Auto Machine Manufacturing Company, advocated protection of the nail-making industry by an ihcrease of the duty on imported nails. He stated that in 1917 2000 tons of nails were imported of the value of £51,406.

The Taumarunui Roofing Tile and Brick Company suggested a duty of 21s per cwt on tiles.

ESCAPE OF PRISONERS OF WAR,

Wellington, Last Night. The Commissioner of Police has received information that six prisoners of war escaped from Featherston Internment Camp this morning. The escapees names are: Charles Hadler (was a sailor on the Star of India when arrested for internment), Martin Kock (fireman on the Ulimaroa), Alfred Krat (arrested from the sailing ship Pampa), J. J. Slijn \arrested in Auckland), William Otteng alias Brauner (arrested in Wellington), Walter Moormeister (arrested at Waihi); Information about how the men escaped was not available to-night. WORK RESUMED ON RIVERINA. Wellington, Last .Night. The post health officer issued a statement to the watersiders that the Rivcrina was now clean, and work was resumed this morning and continued throughout the day. The vessel is expected to sail for Sydney on Thursday evening.

THEFT OF BEER. Whangarci, Lnst Night. Thirteen Maori soldiers, members of the Main Body, were this morning before the Court for the theft of a ten-gallon barrel of beer from the Kaikohe railway station platform. They were on their way to Whangarei to {ret their discharge, and took a barrel into the carriage, locked themselves in. and drank out of a bucket, all being more or less intoxicated. One man locked himself in the lavatory and the door had to be taken off to get him out. Tlie Bench took a lenient view and fined them the cost of the beer (5s each) and 5s lOd railway fare.
