TARANAKI WAR RELIEF. ASSOCIATION.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Taranaki War Relief Association was held at Stratford .yesterday, when there were present: Messrs W. P. Kirk wood (Stratford, chairman), C. E. Bellringer (New Plymouth), J. Stevenson (Waimate), F. W. Atkinson (North Taranaki), W. E. Percival (Inglewood), F. Mills (Hawera), A. E. Washer (Farmers' Union), H. L. Spratt (Returned Soldiers' Association), .J J!. Cramp (Eltham), C. A. Larcombe (Patea), and R. W. J. McNeill (Egmont). A request for a year's extension of the repayment of a loan of £250 was granted. It was resolved to continue the contribution to the regimental funds. Mr .S. G. Smith, M.P., forwarded a letter from the Minister of Education stating that the Taranaki Scholarship was worth £(io per year, tenable for four years, whereas the Junior University Scholarship, awarded at the same examination for much higher qualifications, was worth £SO and fees. As the fee? for an arts course were £lO it was considered thai the Taranaki Scholarship holders were in much the same position. The question of the adequacy of the scholarship allowances would be kept in view when education matters were being considered Mr. Mills brought forward cases In which the Hawera Committee had made grants totalling over £B3 4b to three applicants.

the chairman stated that this exceeded the amount allowed by £53 4s, and if all committees did this the association would soon be in difficulties. It wfss iicitled to endorse the grants, and a notification will be sent to the Hawera Onimitteo. regret that they had not adhered to the £lO maximum grant which branches were authorised to iroika ip any individual case-

The chairman did not think tho emeigancv committee even should deal with Jftrfrc amounts without reference to the executivo. Letters were received from several returned soldiers expressing their appreciation of the association's assistance. A large number of applications for loans and grants were dealt with, being either granted or deferred for further information.
