DEBATE ON THE INDEMNITY. gONAR LAW'S EEPLY. ' London, April 3. A full House eagerly awaited Mr. Bonar Law's reply in the indemnity debate. He said two things must be borne in mind—the amount Germany can pay and the amount transferable to the Allies. It is impossible to secure a large sum by means of labor in the devastated areas. It is obviously proper for the Allies to secure shipping of an estimated.value of £100,000,000. Gold and security did not exist in Germany in great quantities. The other method of, payment was the transference of goodß by means of surplus exports over imports. But fcefore the war imports exceeded exports, the latter amounting only to £600,000,000. Further, Britain has no desire to receive goods to compete with her own industries. Germany could pay largely by credits ovur a long period if the amounts were kept within her power to meet them.— AusN..Z. Cable Assn.
