HEROIC DEFENCE OF ASSOUAN. VALUABLE AEROPLANE SERVICES. Received April 12, 5.5 p.m. London, April 5. Delayed Cairo messages record the story of the heroic defence of Assouan, from which the women and children were evacuated to Cairo. The garrison constructed and defended an area on' March 20, in .which were collected British and foreign residents and refugees from Luxor. The Bedouins temporarily im,proved their posts at Walladia on March 23. Attempts on the 23rd and 24th failed. Two aeroplanes on the 25th assisted the defence with machine guns. Meanwhile the relief force fought their way by steamer to Deirut to assist. They dispersed the snipers on the banks, landed under fire, and immediately restored order. The aeroplanes thereafter dropped leaflets signed by Egyptian notables in the affected districts appealing to native leaders to maintain order.— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
