Burgess, president of the local branch of the Women's National Reserve, cordially invites ail members and intending members to afternoon tea at Kawaroa Park bungalow Wednesday afternoon, when the annual meeting of the reserve will also take place and will commence at 2.30 p.m. SOCIAL NEWS. The interest of the townspeople for the greater part of last week was centred in the functions connected with the opening of the Boys' High School. Thursday was the day set apart for the official opening, while on Friday the sports were on, and in the evening the citizens' ball, and on Saturday a small dance for the boys themselves, so altogether there was quite a round of gaiety. On Friday rain fell in the morning, and it was doubtful if the sports would take place. However, the sun gained supremacy and the boys should have been pleased at the attendance.
The ball, which was held in the Assembly Hall, a gift of the citizens, attracted a great number of people, it being the first event of the kind after a long period of restricted gaiety. The catering was in the hands of the Mayoress, Mrs. C. E. Burgess, who, with the assistance of the wives of the Citizens' Committee, ably carried out he® arduous task. The soft green of the asparagus fern, daintily around the white columns supporting the gallery made a striking background for a very gay scene. The boys' dining room, where a sumptuous supper was served, was a veritable bower of beauty, pale pink flowers and delicately tinted leaves lending a softness to the lights, suggestive of an autumn sunset.
