AWAKINO NEWS.
(From Our Own Correspondent). On Saturday, March 15, Mrs. W. Avery gave an eveniug in the Awakino Hall in aid of the Soldiers' Club. The hall was packed, and the evening was passed in song and dance, and al! enjoyed themselves to the utmost. A recherche supper was served at about 10.30, after which dancing was again indulged in till the midnight hour. The silver coin collection resulted in the sum of £4 being Udded to the fund. Mrs. Avery received her guests in a handsome robe of black crepe de chine, while her two popular daughters, the Misses Marie and Vera Avery, wore grey crepe de chine. Songs were contributed by the Misses K. Thomson and H. and M. Wolfe. Mr. T. Cuinmings, jnr., made a most efficient M.C. It was regretted that through bereavement, Mrs. J. McNeicc was unable to be present. Among those present were Mrs. W. D. Thomson, Mrs. P. Howard, Mrs. W. Avery, Mrs. Bignell, Mrs. Wolfe, Mrs. Condon, Mrs. Wanklyn, Mrs. J. Lowe, Mrs W. Black; Misses K. Thomson, Bambridge, H. and M. Wolfe, Carrington (2), Waring, Shell, MacDonnell, M. and V. Avery, V. and M. Black, and Condon. Mr. Ron Black, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Black, has reached home from the war. He looks rather thin on it, but still as game as ever. Mr. Lai. Black, M.M., another brave son of Mr. and Mrs. W. B'uck, of Awakino, has returned from the front, looking very fit and well after all the horrors of war.
Mr. W. Kelly, who returned some few "weeks ago, is, we understand, shortly to he married to Mi3s Muriel Roy, daughter of Mr. J. B. Roy, of New Plymouth.
The Awakino Collie Club's annual ball was one of the most successful ever held here. Anrongst the ladies present were Mrs. W. Avery. Mesdames N. BigDell, N. Street, P. Howard, S. Whitehead, E. Condon, M. Chair, J. Scott, J. Lowe, J. Rattenbury, 1S T . Clifton, Wanklvn. Senior, Lake, Moore, Christofferson, P. Hansen, McNeice; Misses K. Thomson, Rigg, Chapman, H. Wolfe, Bambridge, Waring, M. Avery, Shell, Condon, MaeDonnell, Carrington, Burkhardt, J. Stewart. Whitehead, Lake, Old (2), Barnes, Ennie, Waite. Some of our best known, and well respected residents have lately been the recipients of anonymous letters, which were, to say the least of it, scurrilous in the extreme, and quite undeserved. It is a pitifully mean and cowardly action oil the part of someone who would do well to take warning and leave such doings undone or he may find the "way of the traducer is hard." «
Still the days show some splendid lines of fat stock travelling out to the dilTeroiit freezing works. Feed is plentiful and pasturage good. Later. I omitted in my list of ladies' names at the Collie Club Ball the name of Miss Tippets, of Auckland, who was a guest of Mrs. J. Rattenbury, of Tongaponitn: also Miss Smith, of Urenui, Misses Williams, Patterson and another young lady from Ingle wood (name? not known). The weight guessing was won by H. Ennis, after which the sheep was auctioned and brought £lB. The cups and medal; were presented by the Patron (Mr. W. I>. Thomson I, and the competitors seceived them from the fair hands oi Miss Kathleen Thomson. The music, which was first-elans, was provided by Mr. L. Riddling, of Maboenui, aad Mesdames MoXeice, Christofferson and Wanklyn, The supper was excellent and done lull justice to by the crowd present. It was the most successful function ever held here.
