DEATH OF MAORI CHIEF. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Te Kuiti, April 10. Hari Homara Wahanui, the great Maniapoto chief, died at Te Kuiti yesterday. ,He had a great influence for good on the natives. He represented the tribe at the coronation of King Edward, and made splendid efforts to recruit Maoris for the war. The Maori king and influential natives arrived at Te Kuiti to-day to attend a great tangi at the burial, MUMPS OX THE CORINTHIC. Wellington, Last Night. A rumor has been circulated here that the steamer Corintliic had cases of influenza aboard. Sir James Allen states that according to recent. advice he received there ia no influenza on the ship, and the onlj sickness -was mumps, of which there were four eases. PUBLIC WORKS POLICY. Wellington, Last Night. The Minister for Public Works said to-day that it was not his intention to go on with a lot of extra public works in order to find work for returning soldiers. As a matter of fact he was already about 3000 men short of the number he ought to have on public works at this time of the year, and he didn't anticipate that even when all the men came back lie would be able to get at once enough men to bring his force up to strength. STONES FOR SOLDIERS' GRAVES. Wellington, Last Night. It is Sir James Allen's intention to cable immediately for information as to what the British Government intends doing in the matter of soldiers who fell on foreign soil. As soon as the way is clear for going on wit! 1 the New Zenland scheme of marking the graves with stones of a uniform pattern, a committee will be calleed together to select the design for the stone.
