Pascoe) reported . that4l irregular attendance notices bad been lent to parents of children attending primary Ichools. Forty-four schools have sent In re- - jnrns for Irregular attendance during the month, wwitnining mostly, names of first offenders. The attendance at the following schools Is ' rood: Voceltown, Te Boti, Tokaora, Pungarehu. .Jkaiawa, Mangatoki, Kaponga, Hawera, Hurford, Dmata, linneity, Eltham, Hawera Convent, Stratford Conrent, and St. Mary's, Stratford. Porty-eight notices have been issued in New Plymouth, Eltham, and Hawera, to parents of toys who come under the compulsory attend- ' mce continuation classes, and whose boys had tot enrolled. The enrollments since have been - nod, but there are still a few cases in Hawera md New Plymouth, which will hare to be dealt Ktth by the law. This work received attention.- Ngaere: I propose to g l carry out painting repairs to the school only. The Ngaere /residence Is not worth wasting paint on and ought to be renewed- The building is very old and out of date. Tahora: I visited this school and went Into the - ' matter of drainage with Mr. Kennedy. The work ia necessary, and the required number of Held pipes will be sent cut. HurimoaDa movable *pchool: I arranged with the Public Works De- , p&rtment to put an extra stay in this building. This win make it quite secure until such time v it may be necessary to move it to a permanent site. FINANCE COMMITTEE. the enlargement of the lfwer rooms at the Lepperton and Whangamomooa schools. The overseer was-.instructed ot at* tend immediately to the safe covering of the well at the Huirangi school. It wadj decided that steps be taken to fence section 132, Huirangi township, for the purpose of using it as a liorse paddock for school children, and that notice be given to the adjoiuisg owners. , It was decided to inform the Public Trustee that the board was prepared to purchase section 94, Lepperton, containing half an,acre, the Lepperton Committee having offered to provide half the amount. It was resolvad that application be made to the Department for a grant of half the cost of purchasing three acres of land directly behind the school at Lepperton, provided the committee agree to pay the balance, and that the Lands Department be approached with a view of obtaining authority for the transfer to the board of the land known as Sissons Terrace, and application be made to the Taranaki County Council for the transfer of the road between the two properties. It was decided to apply to the Department for the establishment of a school at Tawhiti for all standards to replace the present side school, and that plans be prepared for a new school building. It was resolved to. apply for grants for new residences at 6kato, Ngaere, and Norfolk Road and Ohura, and for a washhouse, copper, and tubs for the Waitara residence. It was decided to ask the Eltham Committee to undertake the erection of an additional open-air classroom at Eltham, subject to the supervision of the overseer. The report of Messrs Smith, White, and Grayling on the question of boundaries for a separae district for the Vogeltown school was received and adopted. It was resolved to call the attention of the Huiakama Committee to the hedges, which required trimming, and the Midhirst Committee to the blackberry in the garden grounds. Matters affecting the grounds and buildings of the following schools were referred fo the overseer to report upon: Lincoln, Finnerty, Raupuha, Whakamara, Waiau, Rawhitiroa, Huikazna, Urenui, and Midhirst. The chairman, Mr. Eaves, and the senior inspector were asked to report on the question of a site for a school at Whareroa. The • Ararata Committee were given permission to erect a permanent memorial in the school grounds in honor of Ararata men who had served in the war, subject to the site being approped by the board's overseer. It was decided to point out to the Department that owing to the lapse of time in authorising the giant of £IBB for additions to the Kaponga school the cost of the work would be in excess of the grant. ' v It was decided to telegraph the Department for a definite sad early reply regarding the grant for a new school at Arawhata. A resolution was received from the West End School Committee expressing satisfaction at the exchange of sites, <»m a hope that work in connection with the erection of a new school would be proceeded with at an early date. Accounts amounting to £10,733 18» were passed for payment.
