STRATFORD.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

(All communications, letters, etc., left with Mr H. J. Hopkins, bookseller, will receive prompt attention.)

Stratford, April 9. Excitement can hardly be said to exist in Stratford over the Prohibition vote on Thursday, but those immediately interested are not concealing their opinions.

Mrs. J. W. Boon, president, presided at a meeting of the Ladies' Patriotic Committee held yesterday. Mrs. J. S. McDonald was appointed delegate ( ) the Epidemic Social Welfare Committee. A letter was received from the undersecretary suggesting that further gifts and Red Cross parcels to Britain may be discontinued, whilst advice from Cairo indicated that future requirements for gifts would be purchased from canteen and regimental funds. Material on hand is to be handed over to the Hospital Board, whilst the committee's chairs and other furniture are to be handed over to the Plunket Nurse Society. The next meeting will be held in May.

Messrs Marfell and C. D. Sole spoke at Pihama last evening, and at Opunake were assisted by the Rev. R. B. Tinsley in addressing the electors on the Prohibition question. At both place's the audiences were large and generally sympathetic to the views expounded "by the temperance men.

Weather and other circumstances permitting, a return game of cricket between Midliirst and Toko clubs will be played at Midhirst to-morrow (Thursday).

Four candidates contested the Ngaere vacancy on the County Council yesterday, and the electors' choice fell upon Mr. T. E. Coleman, an ex-councillor, who polldd 61 votes, his nearest opponent being N. B. Fryday 40, while L. P. Rogers secured 45, and E. S. Benentt 22. At the Stratford Golf Club meeting the following officers were elected for next season:—President, D. Hill; vicepresidents, A. W. "Budge and R. Peattie; club captain, D. J, Malone; secretary, W. Pratt; committee, J. R. L. Stanford, J. S. Lyons, H. E. Abraham, R. B. Anderson; auditor, P. Skoglund. The bal-ance-sheet showed receipts £ll2 10s 6d, and expenditure £ll3. Mr. Stanford! who presided, stated that this was the 14th annual meeting, and, in his opinion, was the most successful in the history of the club. Regarding finances the club's position was good, having £7O. worth of assets and practically no" liabilities. Now the war was over he hoped to see the membership increase and more outside matches played this season that? had been the case during the past four years.

Although shipping arrangements are far from being regular or satisfactory. Mr. C. E. James has been fortunate in landing some splendid sets of English china tea-sets, ranging in price from" £1 18s to £2 2s 6d (21 pieces). Later on, dinner and other sets are expected. Those in need of tea-sets would be well advised to call and s*ee Mr. .fames' shipment, which are unique in design and the prices are unapproachabde. Still a good range of ladies' hand-bags to clear.—Advt.
