THE CIVIL SERVICE.

INCREASES OF PAY, (From Our Own Correspondent;. Wellington, April 2. The increases of pay granted to the railway men are to be followed, it is understood, by some improvements in the pay of officers of the Post and Telegraph Department and the Ge/ieral Service under the Public Service Commissioner. It is an old grievance in the public service that there was not uniformity among the Departments. Two men doing similar work in different departments were not paid the same salary. Complaint has often been made that the revenue-earning Deptirtmjits were less liberal in their payments to employees than the non-revenue-earning Departments, owing to the fact that departmental heads had to keep an eye on the annual balance sheet. This question of uniformity has been the subject of a report by heads of Departments. The report was before Cabinet on Saturday and it has since been adopted in a form that will provide certain increases of pay for some civil servants, including teacluers. It does not follow that all civil servants will benefit, but the levelling process will be upward, not downward. It may be taken for granted that the war bonus paid to the civil servants during the last two years will become a permanent addition to salaries.
