NEW PLYMOUTH BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MEETING OF WORKS COMMITTEE. The works committee of Hie New Plymouth Borough Council met last night, there being present the Mayor (Mr. C. H. Burgess) and Crs. J. Clarke, J. W. Hayden, \V. F. Short, E. UriMUis, IX. J. Deare and G. W. Browne. RESERVES COMMITTEE REPORT. The reserves committee made the following recommendations: (11 That consideration of the following matters be deferred: (a) Question of repairs or additions to the sexton's cottage; (b) Rev. Harvie's application for improvements at the mortuary chapel; (c) D. J. Pepper's application tor renewal of grazing rights of part railway reserve between Belt Road and Cutlield Road. (2)" That the sexton's application for paint for painting the two rooms, gates and seats at his cottage be granted, the work of painting to be done by him. (3) That steps be taken to re-enter upon section 4 Avenue Road, leased to Wm. Hardwick. (4) That no action be taken at present in connection with the borough . engineer's recommendation to erect a brick-lined concrete chimney at the baths to remedy the nuisance caused by soot. (5) That provided the custodian of the baihs undertakes to pay for the gas consumed the borough engineer be authorised to purchase a gas stove for the use of the custodian, the cost not to exceed £7 10s, and that the present cooker be taken out. The report was. adopted. DORSET AVENUE.. Six residents of Dorset Avenue petitioned the council to have the formation of the road and footpath in Dorset Avenue put in order, as at present the road and path are unfit for traffic. The engineer stated that to put in order and form a path on one side would cost £SO. He recommended that before authorising the work the whole question of regrafling the streets in the estate be thoroughly considered, in order to avoid possible trouble over drainage at a later date. In the meantime £2O would put the path in order. It was'decided to refer the matter to the streets sub-eonmiittee, with power to act. ABATTOIRS RESERVE.

The manager of the borough abattoir wrpte stating that the conditions under which the council allowed traffic to cross the abattoir reserve had terminated, and asked for instructions as to future conditions. The engineer suggested an annual fee of £25, equal to (id per cubic yard on 1000 cubic yard lots, reducible to 3d if 2000 yards were taken out. It was resolved that no license be issued for more than 3 months, and that the fee be £6. GENERAL. In a lengthy report on the order of works to be undertaken the borough engineer (Mr. W. H. Cook) stated that al» though labor was offering more freely at present than for some time, he had, nevertheless, lost ten men in the last six weeks. The engineer submitted an amended proposal for making improvements to Sackville Street, at an estimated cost of £7o.—The matter was held over. The Hastings Borough Council forwarder for the council's consideration, with a request for support, a resolution' affirming that the time has arrived when the Governor-General of the Dominion should be selected from the people of the Dominion, and suggesting General Sir Andrew Russell as the next occupant of the oflice, in recognition of his great war service—The letter was received. Permission was given to the Kawaroa Park Committee to use Buckley Terrace for the purpose of a stand for motor and other vehicles, in connection with the Easter Monday picnic. The superintendent's report on the publie buildings of the town was received from the secretary of the Fire Board. The applicatior of Barton's Circus for a reduction in the license fee was declined.
