UNREST ON THE RAND.
GOVERNMENT'S FIRM ATTITUDE. Received April 3, 1.20 a.m. Capetown, April 1. In the Assembly, Mr. Ma lan made a statement regarding the unrest on the I-iand, and announced that De Wet and Mentz were proceeding to Johannesburg to inquire into the position. The Government intended to protect life and (Properly. Measures to that end were being taken. The Government was confident that a serious crisis would be avoided. The Assembly adopted by 44 votes to 42 a resolution in favor of woman suffrage. A board of control has been formed at Johannesburg, and issued a manifesto to the effect that the joint strike committee had decided that until the municipal council concedes their demands the board will assume control and resume all municipal services.—Renter.
