STRATFORD.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) (All ccnimunicatlons, letters, etc., left with Mr H J. Hopkins, bookseller, will receive prompt mention ) PRESENTATION TO MR. W. LANDER. Stratford, March 29. Last evening the Mayor (Mr. .1. W. McMillani presided over a meeting of .subscriber? to,a presentation to Mr. W. / Lunder, who is leaving Stratford next week for Auckland. The 'Mayor eulogised Mr. Lander's qualifications as a citixen, and the whole hearted manner it; 'liich he took up public work. He tone lon the capable manner in which Mr. , uder had carried out the duties of sc -tary of the local patriotic committee ring the past few years. This was ). :i{fJit i task, as he (the speaker) knew, -ivingi previously filled the otlice. Those presentj that evening were sorry they were lo=ing the services of a good citizen, and an ! energetic business man, and trusted that increased prosperity and the best of health would follow Mr Lander and family in their new home. As a memento of their stay in Stratford, and in appreciation pf his work, the Mayor expressed the i pleasure it gave him to present Mr. Lan- i der with a purse of sovereigns and a pipe. The latter, he trusted, would allow him to "smoke the pipe of peace," and with the cash he could purchase some article that would serve as a reminder of his stay in their midst. Messrs. W. P. Kirkv/ood, T. Richardson, .1. H. Ford and 0. J. Mnlone spoke in similar terms, all voicing their regret at losing such a line worker for any cause. in replving, Mr. Lander stated that what he had done for patriotic or other put-poses he had done cheerfully, and was proud of it. He thanked them for their "cnerous appreciation of his efforts, and for the presentation and the good wishes for the future, which he hoped would be realised to the utmost. GENERAL. Mr. A. O'Leary has been appointed secretary (to succeed Mr. Lander) to the Patriotic Committee, which met last evening. Sixteen applications for relief from returned soldiers were received and attended to. In conversation with Mr. \V. P. lvirkwood (chairman), that gentleman iniormed me that the men were now returning in large numbers; consequently the committee's work showed a considerable increase during the past few weeks. These are the days of the unskilled laborer. Whatever the cause, the fact remains that unskilled labor to-day is having its ranks augmented by others previously employed in other work. In a sawmill recently I saw ex-bank clerks engaged, and at a freezing works several ex-raihvav employees (some with many years' service) are working shoulder to shoulder with laborers. In a certain town an ex-noliceman is to be seen at piek-and-shovel work, whilst another member of the force ha? resigned to take up other work. Good wages and no worry are the factors that count. - Some time back the Stratford School Committee wrote the railway manager regarding concessions for a seaside picnic. A 'replv has been received from Mr. E. 1-liley. regretting that they could not issue cheap railway fares., but that if the trallic manager, YVauganui, was approached. railway facilities would be available. A railway journey for a familv at ordinary fares is beyond the pocket, of many, but while the management is climbiiig down oil the shortage of trains, it is sitting religiously tight on the question of fares.

Now is the opportunity for ladies desiring to purchase choice handbags of best quality leather. Mr. C. K. James lihs recently received it large shipment of English goods, and is nilering same at prices well within the roach of all. Those on the look-out for wedding and other presents will iind Doultou ware is also being offered in large variety. Don I lorgct to inspect these stores when next in Stratford.
