At the Magistrate's Court, on Thursday, tet'ore Mr A Crooke, S.M., a native yuuili named Thomas Harry (Mr liow) was convicted and ordered to pay costs for assaulting a lad named I'iUsimons, in Opunake, on Saturday evening. Hi was further charged with using obscene language in a public plae?lie was lined £2 and court costs. The police gave accused a good character', which was the reason for the magistrate' dealing leniently with him. In the case, Truant Inspector v Wooier for failing to send his daughter to Kin-.i Road School, the defence was that tiie ciuid was over 14 years of age, and the Magistrate adjourned the case to allow defendant's solicitor (Mr Marshall) to produce birth certificate. -Judgment by default was given for .plaintiff in the following cases:—Campbell and Richards v. G. Kpia, £4 3s 7d. 1 ("osts 19s); same v- Warn, 13s 1W (costs £1 Ifls .(Id); same v. Dodunski, £•?. 15s 4d (costs £1). Mr McDavitt appeared for plaintiff. Egmont County Council obtained judgment against seven natives for arrears of rates. Mr Marshall appeared for the council.

The seaside fote on Wednesday was well attended, although not so large as on former occasions, due no doubt, to the lateness in holding the fete. The •rroßs takings amounted to £lOl. The society will clear a substantial amount for further improvements. The secretary, Mr Sinclair, put in a lot of time in organising the fete. The ladies' committee (a large and industrious one) attended to the luncheon and refreshment stalls. The side' shows and athletic committee put in a lot of good work making the fete a success. The Ride shows comprised hoopla, rings, "hooting gallery, and other events; also numerous events for children: stepping a chain (won hy Mr G. Hammond): wcigM-giiosslng, sheep (won by Mr .Tones): Indies' nail driving (won by Mrs Mildcnhall). The tug-of-wav, town v. country, created* n great deal of interest, and each side won one pull, and the last, which took 2-5 minutes, was de-i-larcd a draw. The contestants were dead beat and will remember the event for ir.nuv days. In the evening the society arranged with M. Andrews (of TCgmont Pictures) to screen a special programme- The attendance was large. After the picture programme the band social was held, which was also crowded. The music was provided hy the hand and a number of voluntary musicians. I forgot to mention that the liniid provided an excellent programme of music at the fete.
