SUGAR INDUSTRY COMMISSION. Received March 27, 10.30 pm. Melbourne, Marcli 27. The Commonwealth Government is appointing a Royal Commission to inquire into the sugar industry in Australia, in view of the world shortage and high price of production; also to consider the question of continuation of Government control of the industry.

SHIPPING SHORTAGE. Melbourne, March 27. The Controller of Shipping reports that, •jhiefiy as the result of quarantine restrictions, there is a serious shortage of interstate shipping tonnage, which threatens grave problems. The coal stocks of the railways, gas companies, manufacturers and mining companies' are rapidly depleting, and current requirements cannot ho met. Failing rc-licf. many will be compelled to close, entailing widespread unemployment.— Aus.-X.Z. Cable Assn.
