Dr. Walker continues to improve slightly, and it is hoped he will soon be out of danger. The ex-Emperor Karl with his family has arrived at a chateau near Rohrehach, Switzerland. Mr. W. S. Short, Under-Secretary for Public Works, ia to retire on superannuation at the end of the present year. Mr. D. Penman, local manager of the Northern Steamship Company, ia at present on holiday leave, and Mr. T, Kay, of the Auckland office, is relieving at New Plymouth. Lieut-Colonel D. S. Wylie, C.M.G., F.R.C.S., officer commanding the Christchurch military hospital, has been promoted tc the full rank of colonel while acting as consulting surgeon in special mftitary surgery. ' The home mission executive of the Methodist Conference has decided to ac cede to the numerous appeal to return the services of the Rev. C. Aker on the Eaat Egmont mission for another year. Tile bank authorities state that Mr Calender's postion as general manager of the Bank of New Zealand was not offered to Mr R. W. Gibbs, manager at Lmnedin.—Press Association. Messrs H. D. Forsyth and A. Morton have returned from a visit to the Waikato in connection with the proposed establishment of milk products industries in Taranaki. The promoters of the industry in the Waikato district gave the visitors all the information at their The Rev. Father O'Farrall, S.M., at one time on the teaching staff of St. Patrick's College, left Wanganui on Saturday for Oreenincadows, Napier, to take up an important post. He will be replaced by Chaplain F. O'Donald, who for the last three and a half years has been at the front in Egypt. Mr. Will Hutehens, of Hawera, yesterday morning received advice that he has been successful in passing the. final examination for the degree of Bacholoi of Music. Mr. Hutehens' work was examined by Sir Charles Stanford, Writing to a member of the Hawera Star staff, Sergeant J. G. Grant, V.C., sends a copy of .the Divisional Routine Order issued by General Russell, id which he records the award of the decoration to Sergeant Grant. The particulars of the special occasion and the operation when the Cross was gained have already been published. Naturally Sergeant Grant is proud of having been the first to win the honor for his native town of Hawera. '
