TURF TOPICS.
(By "Moturoa"). Considerable rain fell at Bulls yesterday, and although rain was badly needed the state of the going is likely to be holding for the Rangitikei Racing Club's annual meeting, which takes to-day and to-morrow. Scratching are likely to be fairly numerous, a good number of those engaged feeling t-lie effects of over-much racing during the past few weeks. Mr Henry's rehandicaps are rather drastic, and may stop those penalised for victories at Opunake. Woodville and Masterton. The Rangitikei Oup, cne' and a quarter miles, will only attract, a small field. Nobleman failed with 9.3 last year, and has 21hs more to carry to-day. He likes the going firm, and the track will be acrainst him. It is whispered that Henry Clay may not be a runner, and could have little chance with Star Lady <it. level weigljts. Loyal Arch and Master Lupin have other engagements, and it is doubtful in which race they wfll start. Master Moutoa won well at Nelson. and he appears to have a good chance, though Star T.ady will probably be sent out, first favorite. Tnah is the nominal favorite for the Scott Memorial Handicap, six furlongs, and is Tikely to run well. Rawakore and Slarengo are well served by fea-ther-weights. Hvginas likes soft going, and should be well supported in the Parawanui Welter. Zola may be the best of the others
The Ngapaki Hack Handicap will see smart backs like Carmel Arch, Gold Problem and Samarang in actionThe Ohakea Hurdle Race will, keep pickers h-.tsy, and the race looks very open. Whiro and Vacuum, recent winners, are much talked about, but some shrewd'judges expect Polthogue to improve on his tipunske running. Hallow and Borealis appear to hold a strong hand in the Carnayon Hack Handicap. One of the hottest favorites of the day will he Sonnino in the Pukenui Welter. Tempo is nicely weighted, and may prove a? good as Wanganui sports imagine. With a start Cance should show in the Trial Plate. Papanui and Otonga can alsfj travel fairly fast. The first race at the Rangitikei ffieet;jn«r starts at 11,10 a.m. Mr J. E. Henrys has made the following re-handicaps and the horses rehandicapped will carry the weights in parenthesis:— Scott Memorial—Hastie l'llbs (7.7), Madam Rist.ori 7.0 (7 7). Olmkea Hurdles —Whiro 14Ibs (11.!)), Vacuum lOlbs (11.4), Movement 101' os (1(1.3). Rangitikei Cup—Star La d v 141bs (7.1). Pukenui Welter—Sonnino lOlbs. (10 0), Mout.oa Tvnnova /lbs (0.4>. Pftrewanui Welter —Ginsv Gen; 71bs (8.7). Ngatiana Hack—Metn'lum fllbs (fl.Sl, Samarang ftlbs (98), TCareao fibs (S.rt).
