At the Midhirst and Toko town halls on Wednesday evening the liquor question will be discussed from the farmer's point of view, the speakers being all well-known practical men who should their addresses interesting. It is hoped that there will be large attendances of the settlers, as the question from an efficiency point of view is vital to the interests of the community. Returned soldiers intend holding a church parade on Sunday, when the unveiling ceremony in connection with soldiers "who have fallen at the front will be conducted by Kev. C. VV. Howard at Holy Trinity Church. Apparently those who were apprehensive over the cases of influenza in the district were needlessly alarmed. According to Mr. A. Gray, health officer, the number of cases notified in the Stratford borough and county was nine, and these proved to be of a mild type of ■ordinary influenza. Preparations in connection with peace are assuming shape. At ICohuratahi last week a meeting of settlers in the Whangamomona County was held to discuss details. It was decided to eliminate one day and confine the celebrations to two days, the Sunday being set apart by Cabinet for thanksgiving' day, and on Monday a combined sports meeting and procession to be held at Whangamomona. The children attending the various schools will take part in the ceremony, and Die nations constituting the Allies will be represented by the scholars. Considerable enthusiasm was shown in the proceedings, it being felt, that all residents in the county will rise to the occasion and make it a memorable one. It is intended to make the returned soldiers'' competition a feature of the programme. In the evening a dance will be held.
Lowgartli sports will be held on Thursday in Mr. R. Burke's paddock. Quite a fine programme of events has been drawn up, and, favored with tine weather, the outing should prove most successful. In the evening a dance will be held. The secretary (Mr. Luke) already has arrangements well in hand. It is anticipated that Toko Coronation Hall will on Thursday be crowded witll dancers, attracted there by the dance promoted by the Returned Soldiers' Association.
I.ast night the Repatriation Committee met and dealt with four applications made on behalf of returned soldiers. The next meeting will be held early in April. Visitors to Stratford should not fail to note the fine display of goods made by Edwards, chemist, in his new premises in the municipal building. The array, or display, is shown to great advantage, whilst purchasers can always rely on the goods being of the highest quality.—Adv. Nothing but the best is what one requires these days.
