WAITARA.

(From Our Own Correspondent). Waitara, March 22. The annual picnic of the Waitara Seaside Improvement, and Surfbathing Society was held on Thursday last, and the society was fortunate in striking a fine day, though at times it appeared as if rain was imminent. .If the weather had looked a bit more promising there would have been a still larger crowd, but as it was there must have been between 700 and 800 people there. Financially it was a great success, the total amount taken being between £7O and £77, as follows:—Collection box, £0 5s Od; ice creams, sweets, etc., £26 3s; luncheon, £2s ss; stepping the chayn, 16s; ladies' nail driving, Ss; guessing weight of cake, £lO lis; social, £0 Is; total £7(i 0s Gd. The cake was won by Dr. Campbell, and the result was announced on the stage at the social. The Ladies' Committee—i Misses G. Brabant, M. Foreman, M. Jenkins, T. Langman and B. Taylor—had spared no effort to make the dance as great a* success as the picnic, and their efforts were crowned with success, as the Clifton Hall was crowded. The music was provided by Misses M. Fowler, B. Murgatroyd and R. Taylor, and extras were played by Mr. J. Taylor and Misses Therkleson and Skelton. E. Procter acted as M.C. It is useless to individualise workers at the beach, as everyone on the committee worked hard to make the picnic a success, and although the expenses artheavy, the society's funds will benefit by about £45. This should enable the Society to continue their improvements at the beach, and although a good deal in this way has been done, there ia still a lot to do.

Waifara was somewhat disappointed that there were not two teams from New Plymouth to compete for the' Tabor Shield, but I understand that owing to a mistake the East End nominations were too late. Next year I hope there will be more competition. The tug-of-war and relay race were both well contested, and next year we are hoping to see several more schools enter for these events. During the afternoon the band played numerous .selections, which were milch appreciated Mr. H. E. Cudbv is to be congratulated on the way the band h«s improved under his conductorship. The election of school committees usually held near the last of the month is to take place off April 14 this year It is hoped parents will take - enough interest in the school to attend the "meeting. As a rule there are barely enough to f-w a committee, and surelv a town of this size should be able to nominate enough candidates in an eioftioa
