INFLUENZA EPIDEMIC.
AUSTRALIAN MEASURES. Sydney, March 21, In reference to the increase of influenza it has been officially stated that the suspected cases reported are immediately removed to the hospital and under 50 per cent, prove to be of the pneumonic type. The Government has appointed a commission of three leading medicoes to watch the progress of the influenza with a view to securing information regarding the cause and treatment of the disease.—Aus.-N.Z. THE WESTLAND CASE. By Telegraph.—Presß Association. Wellington, March 21. The case of the third engineer of the Westland, recently from New York, whose illness caused alarm among the watersiders, was brought under the notice of the Health Department when he was admitted to the hospital. A statement is officially made that on a bacteriological test the case does not appear to be one of influenza, but, as at times like these it has been considered wise to take every possible precaution, the patient has been isolated and will remain under observation for another 24 hours. The medical authorities consider there is no need at present for apprehension among the watersiders or the general public. The watersiders will not resume work on the Westland or Dunsyre (pithout some guarantee, something more than lias already been given by the medical authorities.
