R. D. Morrison to-day a thoroughbred mare, Simper, with a Kilbroney foal at foot, was sold to Mr. Hazlett, of Invercargill, for 1100 guineas. The sire Hymettus was sold to Mr. Gaddes, of Waikato, for 275 guineas. TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") In the list of acceptances for the first day of the Masterton meeting, to be held to-day, Hydrus (9.5) was inadvertently omitted from the Stewards' Handicap. Races at Masterton and Ashburton today. Torfreda (9.5) will be warm in the Flying Handicap. Can you see Pacific "Slope" with the Autumn Handicap? Vacuum paid a great price in the Second Hurdles at Woodville. Magistrate threatens to start an oddson order in the Juvenile at Masterton. Transmission was weighted at 8.4, not 8.0, in the Telephone Handicap. A penalty of 101b should not trouble her. When Snub won the Governor's Plate on Thursday he downed a slashing pair in Eusebius and Mistico. Woodville races were no good to the layers. On the second day the poor, down-trodden punters picked the programme. Stutter was knocking at the door on Thursday, and may have better luck next start. Tenacious seems unbeatable up north, and he should rim well in whatever he starts at the Thames. Uncle Ned had bad luck at Te Aroha, but he ran so well that his followers will all be on again in the Goldiields Cup. _ The Auckland District Committee on Tuesday evening allowed the appeal of Mr. E. Alison, junr., against the disqualification imposed upon him by the Hamilton "stooards." Winners at Woodville will put up penalties at Masterton to-day as follows: Winners of one race 71b, two or more races 101b. Horses handicapped at Bst. 101b or oyer to carry 31b penalty for one win and 51b penalty for two or more wins. No penalty to be incurred in open events for wins in hack races.
Splendid rains have fallen during the past few days, and the courses on this coast are in consequence much improved. Rain was badly needed at Bulls, but now everything is O.K. for next week's races there. A good number of Taranaki horses will race there on Wednesday and Thursday.
The Dimedin Jockey Club is making a big bid for jumpers in June next. The chief steeplechase will be worth a thousand, and there is a £SOO hurdle race on the programme as well. Auckland ivill have to get busy soon. The steeplechaser Nitn has changed hands again, and is now a member of S. Trilford's team. Nita should pay her way at the southern meetings. In 'Rtralia they are resorting to electric batteries to make horses wake up. In these parts the contrivance might he applied to some of the sleepy "Christmas jockeys."
Our old friend Invader changed hands down the West -coast the other day at £l7 10s. He was never worth much more. After racing at Orecnmeadows Chortle walked away very gingerlv. His trainer will be busy keeping the old horse on his feet this autumn. Gloaming is moving- well and his next appearance will be at the Canterbury J.C. Kaster meeting. Trials is working again at Hastings, and is to be given n chance to earn hurdle honors this winter. The sum of 590 guineas was turned down by Kahumiingu's owner the other day. Such a bold jumpei might win more than that in one flutter over the big fences shortly. Next week's racing fixtures include Thames (Monday), Rangitikei (Wednesclay and Thursday). Southland (Wednesday and Thursday),'(iisborne (Thursday), and Poverty Bay (Saturday).
