CENTRAL SCHOOL.
MEETING OP COMMITTEE. The monthl" meeting of the Central School Committee was held on Tuesday evening, Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P., presiding. The chairman referred to the success of the school team in the life-saving competition for the Hughes Cup, and extended the congratulations of the committee to the boys and the school upon their achievement. The headmaster (Mr. H. A. Stratford) reported that the average daily attendance at the Central School for the past four weeks had been 575, out of an, average roll of 621, or 92.1 per cent. At Vogeltown the present roll was 48, and the average attendance had been 44.7. At the certificate examinations held in January last the Misses Billiard, Campbell, Corney, Cassie, and Downs were successful. Owing to illness Miss Hyndman did not present herself for examination. During the month Mr. Catanach commenced his duties as assistant at Vogeltown. Miss Prideaux was still acting as temporary assistant in the Infant School, owing to Miss Jemison's continued indisposition. • A discussion took place with reference to the proposal to supply cocoa to the pupils at lunch time. The committee were in entire sympathy with the scheme and desirous that'it should be instituted at the schools, but recognised that it would entail a considerable amount of work on the part of the teachers. Mr. Stratford expressed his hearty approval of the seheme and said he was sure the teachers would willingly extend their co-operation in giving effect to it. A committee consisting of the chairman and secretary was appointed to comer with the teachers and submit proposals to the next meeting.
