RACES AT MIMI.

(From Our Own Correspondent). There was an animated scene on the Mimi beaeli last Thursday, the occasion being the resuscitation of the race meetings that were so prominent a iew years back. The weather being all that could be desired was lesponsible for bringing a large number of people from the surrounding districts, among whom were a sprinkling from New Plymouth. The sports meeting was held on the sea beach, thus affording facilities for dippers to avail themselves of the sprightly foam. The numerous children, too, were much in evidence in that respect. Of the racing there were some close finishes, proving beyond doubt that, though perhaps some of the horses did not actually emanate from the cup winner strain their prospects are, more or less, hopeful in that direction. The secretarial duties were in the capable hands of Mr. Charles Barnitt. The starter (Mr. T. Buchanan) skilfully got his pack off in fine style and well up to tiino in all the events.

The judge's box was occupied by Messrs. Bert Sheard and Wallie Doubs, who were faced with some exciting finishes and their decisions gave general satisfaction. Mr. Percy Smith was the clerk of scales and his weighing out and in gave no cause for complaint. Mr. Skipper was the clerk of the courses Special mention must be made of the very kindly action of Messrs Corcoran Bros, in allowing free use of their paddocks as a thoroughfare to the beach, the convenience adding much to the day's outing. The ladies' hack race wound up a very enjoyable day's amusement, Miss Rumball being first and Miss Phyllis May second. Results:—
