OPUNAKE RACES. A RECORD GATHERING. GIPSY GEM WINS TSE OOP. biiice the advent of the motor car the Opuuuke lusoiiug has become very popular amongst loiuiwera of racing iu 'i'tuanaki, ana. fcnoU year baa seen tiie club put up fresh records iu tne matter ot attendance, totalisator figures, etc. The aieetiug held yesterday proved no exception, "for though the weather in the morning proved ihreateniug, it cleared off early and consequently a very large crowd motored through from all parts or Taranaki, whilst districts much further afield were well represented. The stand and the lawn proved all too small to comfortably accommodate the crowd, and it is quite evident that largely increased accommodation must be provided if the club is to maintain the position that it has made for itself in the •racing world. Indeed, the committee recognises this and as soon as this meeting is over the whole course is to be remodelled and up-to-date appointments provided. The club has secured" extra land, which will enable it to make the course a mile round instead of being 100 yards short as at present, and the proposed appointments include commodious concrete grandstand, etc. This year, in view of the proposed scheme, the club only effected minor improvements. The meeting proved a most enjoyable one. Fields were good in the majority of cases and finishes were very close, while no incident marred the day's pleasure. The course itself was in good order. Mr A. Morse was starter, and, though lie had some unrirly animals, he exercised considerable patience and got his fields well away. Mr N. Morrin (Hawera) occupied the judge's box, having as associate Mr W. H. Washer, and though the finishes were very close, his decisions were hoisted promptly.

The totalisator was controlled by Mr O'Callaghan whose staff had a busy day handling £27 : 307 as compared with £25,617 last year, an increase of £1690. Mr Kennedy was present as Government supervisor and got through his tn.sk with very little delay. Mr Perrett acted as stipendiary steward, but found little to quibble at, there beins no enquiries. Senior Sergeant Till, of Hawera, and a large staff of police were present, hut their job was a sinecure, the crowd being very orderly. The officials of the club are to be congratulated on the success that attended the meeting and on the completeness of the arrangements Mr A Good as president attended to the comfort of the numerous visitors, whilst Mr P S. Riley (secretary) had everything in his department up to the moment, having a capable and courteous staff of officials. The number b(<ara" was in charge of Mr L. O. Hooker, and though it is a rather olwolete one, he kept it well posted. The Opunake Federal Band, resuscitated for the occasion, with the assistance of members of the Kaponga Band rendered an enjoyable programme of music, and Mr J. Humphries, the conductor, deserves credit for the results achieved. The catering in the hands of Mrs Foster, of Eltham, left nothing to be desired, whilst the booth was ably conducted by Mr Dunn (Manaia).
